Welcome back to Day 6 of our special 7-day Spring Prep series! If you missed yesterday, we were talking about sustainable home extensions and building for the future. But today, we’re stepping outside. Specifically, we’re looking at that big blue dream in your garden.
It’s April in Surrey, and with Saturday the 4th now here, the sun is starting to show its face (occasionally), and everyone’s thoughts are turning to summer garden parties and cooling off in a private pool. If you're currently in the middle of planning a pool or pond installation, or you're right in the thick of construction, listen up. We’ve seen it all at Heat Eco Building Services, from the stunning successes to the absolute "what were they thinking?" moments.
Getting a pool in Surrey isn't just about digging a hole and filling it with water. There’s local soil to consider, the erratic British weather, and the ever-growing need for eco-conscious builds. To make sure your summer isn't ruined by a "money pit" in the backyard, here are the seven biggest mistakes we see homeowners making and exactly how we fix them.
1. Diving In Without a Real Plan (or Budget)
We get it: you want to be swimming by June. But rushing the design phase is the quickest way to end up with a pool that looks like an afterthought. We often see people who haven't considered how the pool integrates with the rest of their landscaping.
A common trap is underestimating the budget by only looking at the shell of the pool. You’ve got to think about the filtration systems, the decking, the heating, and the safety fencing. Who wants a stunning pool if the patio around it is a trip hazard or just plain ugly?
The Fix: Work with designers who offer 3D renderings. This lets you see the layout before a single spade hits the dirt. At Heat Eco, we always sit down with our clients to discuss the "whole garden" approach. We look at how you’ll move from the house to the water. We also suggest setting aside a 10-15% contingency fund because, let’s be honest, groundworks can always throw up a surprise or two.
2. Choosing the Wrong Spot in the Garden
It’s tempting to stick the pool in that unused corner at the back of the garden. But wait: is that corner shaded by a massive oak tree? Or is it the lowest point of your garden where all the rainwater collects?
Building too close to trees is a nightmare for maintenance. You’ll spend your entire summer skimming leaves, and eventually, those roots could make a mess of your pool shell. Also, think about the sun. You want the pool where it gets the most afternoon light to help keep the water naturally warmer.
The Fix: Conduct a thorough site evaluation. We check for wind direction (to avoid wind chill), sun exposure, and, most importantly, underground utilities. You don't want to find out the hard way that your main sewer line runs right through your intended deep end.

3. Ignoring the Dreaded "Surrey Drainage"
Surrey has a lot of clay. If you know, you know. Clay holds water, which means if your drainage isn't perfect, your pool is essentially sitting in a giant wet sponge. This creates "hydrostatic pressure", basically, the water in the ground tries to push the pool out of the earth. We’ve seen empty fiberglass pools literally pop out of the ground because of poor drainage.
The Fix: Professional grading and specialized drainage systems are non-negotiable. We ensure the pool decking slopes away from the water and install French drains or soakaways to manage runoff. This is part of our building maintenance expertise: it’s not just about what looks good; it’s about what stays put for the next thirty years.
4. Skimping on the Permits and Regulations
This one isn't the "fun" part of pool building, but skipping it is a massive mistake. Surrey councils have specific rules about building near boundaries, safety fencing, and even the "change of use" for land. If you build without the right permissions, you could face fines or be forced to fill it back in. Not exactly the summer vibe you were going for.
The Fix: Hire a contractor who knows the local Surrey building codes. We handle the paperwork and ensure everything is "by the book." This includes Part P electrical safety certifications for your pumps and heaters: something you definitely don't want to DIY.
5. Using "Old School" Heating Methods
This is a big one for us at Heat Eco. Traditional gas or oil heaters for pools are incredibly expensive to run and not great for the planet. In 2026, there’s no reason to be using outdated, energy-guzzling systems.
The Fix: Go eco-conscious. We are huge advocates for pool heat pumps. They work like a fridge in reverse, pulling heat from the air and putting it into your water. Even better? Pair your pool system with PV solar panels or water solar panels. This can cut your running costs to almost nothing. It’s better for the environment and much better for your bank account in the long run.

6. The "Silent Killer" – Poor Equipment Placement
People often forget about the "plant room": the pump, the filter, and the heater. If you put these right next to your master bedroom window or tucked behind the seating area where you plan to enjoy a glass of wine, the constant hum is going to drive you mad.
We also see equipment placed in areas that are impossible to access. If your filter is hard to reach, you won't clean it. If you don't clean it, your water turns green. It’s a vicious cycle.
The Fix: We plan the equipment placement to be tucked away but accessible. We use sound-dampening enclosures and high-quality, quiet-running pumps. Modern systems can even be controlled via your smartphone, so you can turn the heat up while you're still at work in Guildford and have it ready when you get home.
7. Choosing "Cheap" over Quality (The DIY Disaster)
We love a bit of DIY, but a swimming pool is a massive structural engineering project. Using low-quality liners, cheap pipes that will leak in two years, or trying to do the plumbing yourself is a recipe for disaster. We’ve been called out to "fix" so many DIY pool projects where the cost of the repair ends up being double what a professional installation would have been.
The Fix: Invest in quality from day one. This means high-grade pipework, proper insulation to keep the heat in, and professional finishing. Look at the quality of the stonework and tiling: that’s what you’ll be looking at every day.

Why Local Expertise Matters in Surrey
Whether you're in Farnham, Guildford, or anywhere across Surrey, the local landscape presents unique challenges. At Heat Eco Building Services, we pride ourselves on being more than just builders; we’re problem solvers.
When we take on a pool project, we’re looking at it through the lens of our plumbing and heating background. We ensure that your water systems are efficient and that your outdoor space is as sustainable as your indoor one.

Getting Ready for Summer
Spring is the absolute best time to get your pool sorted. Whether you’re looking for a brand-new installation or your current pool needs a serious eco-upgrade (maybe it’s time to ditch the old boiler for a heat pump?), we can help.
Don't let your garden become a construction site all summer long because of poor planning. If you want to chat about how we can make your pool dreams a reality: and do it in a way that’s kind to the planet: get in touch with us at our contact page.
Tomorrow, we’re finishing our series with a look at eco-friendly bathroom renovations. If you’re thinking of upgrading your sanctuary, you won’t want to miss it. Until then, keep dreaming of those summer dips!
