It started with a phone call that sounded a bit like a ghost story. One of our regular customers over in Aldershot rang us up, sounding a little bit confused and a lot worried.
They kept hearing this constant "whooshing" sound coming from under the floorboards and behind the walls, but there wasn't a drop of water to be seen inside the house. No damp patches, no dripping taps, nothing. Just this relentless sound of rushing water that wouldn't quit, even when all the taps were turned off tight.
Now, if you’ve been in the trade as long as we have at Heat Eco Building Services, you know that a "whooshing" sound is usually bad news. It’s not the gentle "tink-tink" of a cooling pipe or the "thump" of a water hammer. A constant whoosh usually means water is going somewhere it shouldn't, and it’s going there fast. We told them to sit tight, and we got an emergency plumber Aldershot way out to the property straight away.
When the team arrived, the first thing we did was check the water meter. Sure enough, the little dial was spinning like a top. That’s the classic sign: if you aren't using water but the meter says you are, you’ve got a leak. The mystery was just where it was hiding.
Digging Into the Problem
Sometimes, finding a leak is easy. You look for the puddle. But this one was a bit more stubborn. Because the ground around this particular Aldershot property was quite well-drained, the water wasn't bubbling up to the surface.
It was just disappearing straight into the earth, which is why the customer could hear the noise but couldn't see the mess.
We started our investigation and it didn't take long to narrow it down to the main water pipe coming into the property. This is the big one: the water main. When these go, they don't just drip; they fail spectacularly. We had to do a bit of careful excavation to get down to the pipe, and that’s when we found the culprit.
Michael actually uploaded 4 photos of this job today, and they really show the scale of what we were dealing with. In those photos, you can see the exact moment we uncovered the pipe, and one shot in particular tells the whole story: a corroded copper pipe with green oxidation around a tiny pinhole leak. And here’s the mad bit, that pinhole was responsible for the high-pitched whooshing sound the customer heard.
When a pipe is under mains pressure, a pinhole doesn’t “drip”, it jets. That little hole turns into a miniature pressure nozzle, pushing out a fast, tight stream that can sound way louder than you’d ever expect, especially under floorboards and through walls where it carries. So yeah, it looked small, but it was screaming away 24/7 under the customer’s garden.

Why You Should Never Ignore the "Whoosh"
A lot of people think that if they can’t see a leak, it’s not a problem. They figure they'll get around to calling a plumber when the ceiling starts sagging or the carpet gets wet. But this Aldershot job is a perfect example of why that's a dangerous game to play.
First off, there’s the cost. A hole that size in a water main is dumping hundreds, if not thousands, of litres of water every single day. If you’re on a water meter, your next bill is going to look like a phone number. It’s literally money down the drain. Then there’s the damage to the property itself. Even if the water isn't coming into the house, it’s washing away the soil and sub-base underneath your foundations or your driveway. Over time, that leads to subsidence, sinkholes, and some very expensive structural repairs.
We always tell our customers: your house talks to you. If it’s making a new noise: a whistle, a groan, or a whoosh: it’s trying to tell you something is wrong. Ignoring it won't make it go away; it’ll just make the eventual repair bill a whole lot bigger.
The Repair Process
Once we found the hole, we had to move fast to get the water back on for the family. In the photos Michael shared, you can see the team getting stuck in. Plumbing repair isn't always glamorous: it’s often a lot of mud and hard work: but there’s a real satisfaction in seeing a problem like this get solved properly.
We had to cut out the damaged section of the pipe. You can't just patch a hole like that, especially on a high-pressure main. We used professional-grade couplings and a fresh length of heavy-duty piping to bridge the gap. We make sure all our repairs are built to last, because the last thing we want is to be back there in six months doing the same job again.

After the new section was fitted, we did the moment of truth: turning the water back on. We checked the joints, watched the meter (which had finally stopped its frantic spinning), and listened. Silence. The whooshing was gone, and the customer could finally have a cup of tea without feeling like they were sitting next to a waterfall.
Beyond Emergency Repairs
While we’re well known as an emergency plumber Aldershot residents can rely on, we do a lot more than just fixing holes in pipes.
This job was a reminder of how important the core infrastructure of your home is. Whether it’s your water main, your boiler installation, or even your underfloor heating, everything needs to be in top shape to keep your home running smoothly.
If we hadn't caught this leak when we did, the customer might have been looking at a much bigger project, like a full garden landscaping job to repair the ground that had been washed away. It just goes to show that a little bit of proactiveness goes a long way.
What to do if you suspect a leak
If you’re sitting at home in Aldershot, Guildford, or anywhere across Surrey and you think you hear something "odd" in your plumbing, here’s a quick checklist of what to do before you give us a ring:
- Check your water meter: Turn off every tap and appliance (dishwasher, washing machine) in the house. Go look at your meter. If it’s still moving, you’ve got a leak.
- Listen at night: When the house is quiet, noises are much easier to track. Does the sound stop when you turn off the internal stopcock? If so, the leak is likely inside the house. If it keeps whooshing, it’s probably on the main supply pipe before it hits your stopcock.
- Look for green patches: In the summer, if one part of your lawn is suspiciously lush and green while the rest is brown, there’s probably water leaking underground right there.
- Don't wait: A small noise today is a big bill tomorrow.
