Thinking about energy bills isn't exactly fun, is it? We’ve all seen the news, and quite frankly, looking at a gas bill these days is enough to make anyone want to go back to living in a cave with a small fire. But we’re Heat Eco Building Services, and we reckon there’s a better way to handle it without the smoke and the damp.
This post is actually the start of a little 7-day series we’re doing. We want to show our neighbours in Farnham, Guildford, and Bordon exactly how they can stop worrying about price caps and start enjoying a home that’s actually smart about energy. Who wants a nasty cold house in there home because they're scared to turn the dial up? Not you, and definitely not us.
Future-proofing isn't just a buzzword. It’s about making sure your house isn't a "dinosaur" that costs a fortune to run in five years. Whether you're over in Bordon or right in the heart of Guildford, these five steps are the roadmap we use to help our clients save money and stay warm.
Step 1: The "Fabric First" Approach (Fixing the Leaks)
Before we even talk about fancy new boilers or shiny solar panels, we have to talk about the house itself. You wouldn't put a brand new engine in a car that has no tyres, right? The same goes for your heating. If your loft insulation is looking a bit thin or your windows are rattling every time the wind blows through the Surrey Hills, you're just throwing money out the window.
We always tell people to start with the "fabric." This means:
- Loft Insulation: Most older houses in Farnham only have a tiny bit of insulation. We recommend aiming for 300mm to 400mm. It’s the cheapest way to lower your bills instantly.
- Draught Proofing: It sounds old school, but fixing gaps around doors and letterboxes makes a massive difference to how your heating feels.
- Cavity Walls: If your home was built between the 1920s and 1980s, you might have empty cavities. Filling them is a quick win.
By doing this "fabric first" stuff, you reduce the amount of heat your home actually needs. That means when we come to size up a new system, we can often suggest smaller, more efficient equipment which saves you even more money on the install.
Step 2: High-Efficiency Boiler Upgrades
Not everyone is ready to jump straight into a full renewable setup, and that’s totally fine. Sometimes the best move is to replace an old, clunky boiler with something that actually works properly. If your current boiler is more than 10 or 12 years old, it’s probably running at about 60% or 70% efficiency. That means for every pound you spend, 30p is just vanishing.

When we handle a boiler installation in Farnham or Guildford, we’re looking at modern A-rated condensing models. These things are incredibly efficient: often over 90%. We’ve seen customers’ bills drop significantly just by making this one switch.
The results speak for themselves. We recently finished an install over in Bordon where the old back boiler was practically screaming for mercy. We put in a sleek new system, tidied up the pipework (we love a bit of neat copper, as you can see in the photo!), and the client is already seeing the difference in their monthly outgoings. It’s about getting the heart of your home beating properly again.
Step 3: Making the Switch to Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Now, if you really want to future-proof, you need to look at Air Source Heat Pumps. This is the big one. With the UK moving away from gas, a heat pump is the way forward. They work by taking heat from the outside air (even when it’s freezing in Guildford!) and boosting it to heat your home and water.

A lot of people worry about the cost, but here’s the thing: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) currently offers a £7,500 grant to help homeowners switch. That makes the price very competitive compared to a standard boiler replacement.
When we do a heat pump installation, we don't just "slap it in." We do a full room-by-room heat loss calculation. We check your radiators to see if they need up-sizing (because heat pumps run at lower temperatures than boilers) and make sure the whole system is designed for maximum efficiency. It’s a gentler, more consistent way to heat a home, and it feels much more comfortable than the "blast of heat followed by cold" you get with old radiators.
Step 4: The Ultimate Duo: Solar PV and Battery Storage
If you really want to win the energy game, you pair your heating with PV Solar Panels. Surrey actually gets a decent amount of sun (believe it or not!), and a well-placed roof can generate a huge amount of free electricity.

Think about it: your heat pump runs on electricity. If that electricity is coming for free from your roof, your heating costs effectively drop to near zero during the day. But what happens when the sun goes down? That’s where Battery Storage comes in.
We’re installing more and more batteries in places like Farnham and Bordon lately. A battery stores that extra solar power during the day so you can use it to run your lights, TV, and heat pump in the evening. Plus, if you’re on a "time-of-use" tariff (where electricity is cheap at night), you can even charge your battery from the grid when it’s cheapest and use it when prices spike during the day. It’s like having your own little power station.
Step 5: Smart Controls and Underfloor Heating
The final step in future-proofing is how you control all this tech. There's no point having a high-tech system if you’re still using a dial from 1994. Smart thermostats like Tado or Hive allow you to control each room individually from your phone. You can turn the heating down in the spare room while keeping the lounge cozy for a movie night.

And if you’re doing a renovation or extension, underfloor heating (UFH) is the gold standard. It’s perfect for heat pumps because it covers a large surface area, meaning it doesn't need to be as hot as a radiator to keep you warm. Plus, it feels lovely on your feet on a cold Surrey morning.
We’ve put UFH into several house extensions in Guildford recently, and the feedback is always the same: "Why didn't we do this sooner?" It frees up wall space (no more ugly radiators) and provides a really even, comfortable heat.
