It’s July 2026 and we’ve finally seen some decent sunshine across Surrey, but if you’re like most of our customers in Farnham and Guildford, you’re probably already thinking about the winter bills. We get it. Energy prices aren’t exactly playing fair these days and the cost of keeping a big Surrey home warm: especially those off the gas grid in places like Bordon or Tilford: is enough to make anyone want to look at alternatives.
This is part of our "Sustainable Surrey" series and today we’re diving deep into the bit everyone asks us about: the money. How do you actually pay for these upgrades without breaking the bank? The good news is that 2026 is actually a bit of a "sweet spot" for financing. Between the beefed-up grants and the tax breaks that won't last forever, there’s a real window here to get your house future-proofed for much less than you'd think.
The £7,500 Kickstart: The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
If you’ve still got an old gas boiler or, worse, an expensive oil tank sitting in the garden, this is your biggest win. Right now, the government is handing out £7,500 vouchers to help people switch to air-source heat pumps.
But here’s the really interesting bit for our local Surrey folks: if you’re off the gas grid (which many of you are in the villages around Farnham), there’s a special "off-gas uplift." From now until March 2027, you could actually snag £9,000 towards that heat pump. We’ve seen cases lately where, once you've got that grant, the cost of installing a brand-new, eco-friendly heat pump is basically the same as just replacing your old oil boiler. Who wants a nasty oil tank in there garden anyway when you can have a clean system that does the work for you?
We’ve integrated these systems into some stunning new kitchen designs recently, and honestly, you wouldn’t even know the tech is there, it’s that quiet and compact.

The Ticking Clock: 0% VAT until March 2027
We hate to be the ones with the "limited time offer" vibe, but this one is serious. Currently, there is 0% VAT on energy-saving materials. That includes heat pumps, solar panels, and even some types of insulation.
This saves you thousands right off the top. But: and it’s a big but: the government has scheduled this to end in March 2027. If you wait until next summer to start your project, you could be looking at a 5% or even 20% jump in price just because of the tax. If you’re planning a big bathroom renovation with high-efficiency radiators or underfloor heating, getting the energy-saving components sorted now is just smart business.
The Local Surrey Boost: Warm Homes Local Grant
For those of us living in the Guildford or Waverley districts, it’s always worth checking the Warm Homes Local Grant. These are often managed at a more local level and can sometimes be stacked with national funding.
They’re designed to help households that might be struggling with high bills or have homes that are particularly hard to heat (we're looking at you, Victorian cottages). It can cover everything from cavity wall insulation to loft top-ups. Even if you don’t qualify for the full amount, getting the basic "envelope" of your house sorted makes any heating system we install work twice as hard for half the cost.
Passive Income: Solar Panels and the SEG
If you’ve got a south-facing roof in Bordon or Farnborough, you’re sitting on a goldmine. Solar panels aren't just about "saving" money anymore; they’re about making it.
With the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), your energy supplier actually pays you for the extra electricity you don't use. In 2026, we’re seeing customers save (and earn) over £800 a year just from their solar setup. Pair that with a battery, and you’re looking at a home that practically runs itself during the summer months.

The "50% Rule": Heat Pumps vs. Oil and LPG
We get asked all the time: "Is it actually cheaper to run?"
The answer is a big fat yes, especially if you’re currently on oil or LPG. A well-designed heat pump (which is where we come in) can reduce your heating bills by 50% or more compared to oil.
Why? Because for every 1kW of electricity the pump uses, it pulls in about 3kW to 4kW of "free" heat from the air. It’s basically magic, but with better engineering. When you combine those lower running costs with the £9,000 grant and the 0% VAT, the "payback period": the time it takes for the system to pay for itself in savings: is getting shorter every year.
Your Step-by-Step Finance Plan
So, how do you actually do this without a massive headache? Here is the practical plan we usually suggest to our customers:
1. The Audit (The "Where am I leaking?" Phase)
Before spending a penny on big kit, we look at the insulation. Check your EPC: actually, as of April 2026, you don't even need a valid EPC to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme anymore, but it's still a great roadmap. Look at your loft and walls. If you’re doing a renovation anyway, maybe look at affordable eco-friendly cladding to wrap the house in a warm blanket.
2. Grab the "Big Voucher"
Apply for the BUS grant. We handle a lot of the paperwork for our customers because, let's face it, nobody likes government forms. This takes £7,500 to £9,000 off the bill immediately.
3. The Bathroom/Kitchen Integration
If you're already doing a walk-in shower or a wetroom, that’s the perfect time to upgrade the pipework. Underfloor heating works perfectly with heat pumps because it runs at a lower temperature, which is way more efficient.

4. Solar and Storage
Once the heating is sorted, look at the roof. Adding solar allows you to "fuel" your heat pump for free when the sun is out. It’s the final piece of the puzzle that turns your house into a mini power station.
We’re Here to Help
Look, we know it’s a lot to take in. Moving away from a traditional boiler to a full eco-setup feels like a big jump, but the results speak for themselves. We’ve been out in Farnham and Guildford all week helping people map this out, and the feeling of security our customers get when they aren't worried about the next oil delivery is lovely to see.
Whether you’re looking at a full system swap or just want to know if your current pipes can handle a heat pump, give us a shout. We’re a friendly bunch and we’d much rather give you some honest advice now than have you miss out on the 0% VAT window next year.
