Living in Guildford or anywhere around Surrey really, we’re lucky to have some of the most beautiful homes in the country. But let’s be honest: a lot of these older properties weren't exactly built with "carbon footprints" in mind. We’ve all felt that chill in the winter or seen those energy bills creep up and up, and it’s getting to the point where just turning the thermostat down a notch isn’t enough anymore.
At Heat Eco Building Services, we spend most of our days talking to homeowners in Farnham, Guildford, and Bordon who want to know how they can stop wasting money and start doing there bit for the planet. Future-proofing sounds like a big, scary word, but it’s actually just about making smart choices now so your home stays comfortable, affordable, and valuable for the next twenty years.
This guide is going to walk you through five practical steps to transform your house into a green machine. We’re talking solar, heat pumps, and even how to make that swimming pool more eco-friendly.
Step 1: The "Fabric First" Approach (Don't Heat the Street!)
Before you go and buy the fanciest new heat pump on the market, you’ve got to look at the "fabric" of your house. It’s the stuff that keeps the heat in. There is no point putting a state-of-the-art heating system into a house that’s as leaky as a sieve. You’re basically just paying to heat the air outside, and nobody wants that.
We always tell our clients: start with insulation. Most Surrey homes have loft insulation, but is it thick enough? Over time, that old yellow glass wool settles and loses its fluffiness. You want about 270mm of the good stuff up there. Then there’s the walls: if you’ve got cavity walls, getting them filled is one of the quickest wins you can get.
Don't forget the draughts either. Those lovely sash windows in Guildford can be a nightmare for letting in cold air. Simple things like draught excluders, sealing around door frames, and even making sure your letterbox has a brush can make a massive difference. When we do commercial building maintenance, we see how much energy is lost through tiny gaps: it’s the same for your home!
Step 2: Harnessing the Sun with Solar PV and Battery Storage
Once your house is snug, it’s time to think about where your energy comes from. Solar panels (or Solar PV) are basically a no-brainer these days. We’ve seen the technology jump forward so much lately. It’s not just about saving money anymore; it’s about energy independence.

The real game-changer though is battery storage. In the old days, you’d generate all this lovely green electricity during the day when you were at work, and it would just go back to the grid for pennies. Now, we install batteries that soak up that sun so you can use it to run your dishwasher at night or charge your car.
If you’re in a place like Bordon or Farnham where we get a decent amount of sunlight, solar can seriously slash your carbon emissions. Plus, it looks pretty techy and cool on the roof. We can help you figure out the best layout to get the most "bang for your buck" and ensure your eco-friendly design actually works for your lifestyle.
Step 3: Switch to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)
If you really want to future-proof, you’ve got to talk about the boiler. We know, we know: most of us are used to that white box in the kitchen humming away. But gas and oil are on their way out. The government is pushing hard for Air Source Heat Pumps, and for good reason.

An ASHP works like a fridge in reverse. It takes heat from the outside air (even when it’s freezing outside!) and pumps it into your home. It’s incredibly efficient. For every 1kW of electricity you put in, you get about 3kW or 4kW of heat out. That’s math we like.
Now, a lot of people worry that heat pumps aren’t "hot" enough. That’s where the insulation we talked about in Step 1 comes in. If your house is insulated, a heat pump will keep you toasty all year round. We’ve been doing more and more of these in the Guildford area, and once people get used to the steady, comfortable warmth, they never want to go back to the "on-off" blast of an old boiler.
Step 4: Upgrade to High-Efficiency Systems and Underfloor Heating
Maybe you aren't quite ready for a full heat pump yet. That’s okay! You can still make huge strides by upgrading your current system. If your boiler is more than 10 years old, it’s probably dragging your EPC rating down and costing you a fortune.
A modern, eco-friendly boiler is much more efficient than the old ones. And if you pair it with underfloor heating, you’re onto a winner. Underfloor heating is great because it runs at a lower temperature than radiators but covers a bigger surface area. It’s the perfect partner for a heat pump down the line, too.

Look at this stunning setup above. We love installing underfloor heating because it clears up wall space (no more ugly radiators!) and feels amazing on your feet on a cold Monday morning. It’s all about creating that "cooking magic" in the heart of your home while keeping the planet in mind. If you're looking at boiler options, definitely ask us about how they can integrate with smarter heating controls.
Step 5: Don’t Forget the Water (Bathrooms and Pools)
Future-proofing isn't just about electricity and gas; it’s about water too. We’re seeing more droughts and water restrictions in Surrey, so being water-wise is part of being eco-conscious.
When we do a bathroom renovation, we always look for low-flow taps and dual-flush toilets. You wouldn't believe how much water a leaky old loo wastes. And honestly, who wants a nasty bathroom in there house these days when you can have something sleek and sustainable?

And for those of you lucky enough to have a pool or a pond: don't let it be an energy drain! We specialize in pool and pond installation and we can help you set up solar heating or more efficient pump systems. It’s all part of the same puzzle. Why have a green home if your pool is burning fossil fuels all summer? We can make the whole property work together.
Getting it Done
Look, we get it. It’s a lot to take in. But you don’t have to do it all at once. Maybe this year you do the loft and the boiler, and next year you look at the solar panels. The important thing is having a plan.
At Heat Eco Building Services, we’re all about friendly, reliable advice. We aren't here to sell you stuff you don't need: we’re here to help you build a home that’s ready for the future. Whether you're in Guildford, Farnham, or anywhere else in Surrey, give us a shout. We’ll come over, have a look at what you’ve got, and give you a fair price to get your home where it needs to be.
