So, we’re officially at Day 4 of our 7-day Spring prep series here at Heat Eco Building Services. Earlier this week we’ve been busy looking at boiler checkups in Farnham and getting those swimming pools ready for the Surrey summer. Yesterday was all about those stunning eco-friendly bathrooms in Guildford, but today? Today we’re diving into the topic that’s on everyone’s lips right now: Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs).
If you’ve taken a walk around Guildford, Farnham, or any of the lovely villages across Surrey lately, you’ve probably noticed those fan units sitting outside houses. It’s not just a trend, it’s a massive shift in how we think about heating our homes. We’re seeing more and more of our clients asking about them, and honestly, the timing couldn't be better. Spring is the perfect season to talk about this because while the weather is finally warming up, it’s the best time to plan your home’s energy future without the pressure of a freezing January morning.
What’s All the Fuss About, Anyway?
Let’s be honest, for years we’ve all just relied on the old gas boiler. It sat in the cupboard, did its job, and we didn’t think much about it until it went bang. But things are changing. Between rising energy prices and a collective push to be a bit kinder to the planet, people are looking for alternatives.
An Air Source Heat Pump is essentially like a fridge but in reverse. It takes the heat from the outside air, even when it’s cold out there!, and compresses it to create warmth for your radiators, underfloor heating, and hot water. It sounds like magic, but it’s just clever engineering.

The reason everyone in Surrey is talking about them is because of the sheer efficiency. A traditional gas boiler might be 90% efficient if it's a newer model. An air source heat pump? You’re looking at 300% to 400% efficiency. That means for every unit of electricity you put in, you’re getting three or four units of heat out. Who wouldn’t want that for there home?
The £7,500 Reason to Listen
Now, I know what you’re thinking because I hear it from clients every day: "Michael, aren't they expensive to install?"
A few years ago, you might have been right. But right now, the government is practically begging you to make the switch. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) has been a total game-changer. They’ve bumped the grant up to £7,500. That’s seven and a half grand straight off the cost of the installation. When you combine that with Surrey County Council’s "Switch Together" program, which helps with group purchasing, the "too expensive" argument starts to fall apart pretty quickly.
We’ve helped plenty of families navigate these grants. It’s a bit of paperwork, sure, but the results speak for themselves when that first winter bill arrives and it isn’t nearly as scary as it used to be.
Spring: The Strategic Time for a Swap
Since we’re in the middle of our Spring prep series, I have to mention why we’re talking about this now. Most people wait until their boiler dies in December to think about heating. That’s a nightmare scenario. You’re cold, you’re stressed, and you just want the quickest fix possible.
By looking at it in March or April, you’ve got time. We can come out, do a proper survey of your property, and see if your current radiators are up to the task or if you might want to consider underfloor heating in some rooms. It gives us a chance to do the job properly without you having to huddle around a portable electric heater while the work is done.

Is Your Surrey Home Actually Ready?
We get asked this a lot: "Will it work in my 1930s semi?" or "Is my cottage in Shere too old?"
The truth is, most homes can work with a heat pump, but they do need to be insulated well. There’s no point pumping efficient heat into a house if it’s all flying out of the roof or through drafty old windows. That’s why we take a holistic approach. When we visit a site in Guildford or Aldershot, we don't just look at the boiler cupboard. We look at the whole building.
Sometimes, we suggest a bit of maintenance first. Maybe your system needs a power flush to clear out years of sludge so the new pump can work at peak performance. Or perhaps it’s about upgrading a few key radiators to "low-temp" versions that have a larger surface area.
The Underfloor Heating Connection
If you’re planning a renovation, maybe one of those eco-friendly bathrooms or a new kitchen extension, then a heat pump is a no-brainer. Heat pumps love underfloor heating. They work at lower temperatures than gas boilers, which is exactly what underfloor pipes need to keep a room feeling cozy and consistent.
Imagine waking up on a crisp Spring morning, stepping onto a warm floor, and knowing that your heating is costing you a fraction of what your neighbors are paying. It’s about that "cooking magic" in the kitchen and the comfort of the living room combined.

Being Kind to the Planet (And Your Pocket)
We call ourselves Heat Eco Building Services for a reason. Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us; it’s the core of what we do. By switching to an ASHP, you’re significantly cutting your carbon footprint. You’re moving away from burning fossil fuels in your own home.
If you really want to go for the "gold medal" of eco-living, pairing a heat pump with solar panels is the way to go. You can use the free electricity from the sun to run the pump. We’re seeing a lot of this in the more rural parts of Surrey where people have the roof space. It’s a brilliant way to become almost entirely self-sufficient.
Common Myths We Hear in the Pub
I hear all sorts of things when I'm out and about. "They’re too noisy," "They don't work when it's freezing," "They look ugly."
Let’s clear those up:
- Noise: Modern units are incredibly quiet. If it’s installed correctly by a professional team (like us!), you’ll barely hear a hum. It’s certainly quieter than an old-fashioned boiler rattling away in the kitchen.
- The Cold: These systems are designed for Scandinavian winters. A bit of Surrey frost isn't going to stop them. They can extract heat from the air even when temperatures drop well below zero.
- Looks: Okay, they are a box outside your house. But with some clever landscaping or a tidy installation, they blend right in. Plus, we think they look like a badge of honor for a modern, eco-conscious home!
Maintenance is Key
Just like we talked about with swimming pool pumps on Day 2, maintenance is everything. A heat pump can last 15 to 20 years if it’s looked after. That’s much longer than the average lifespan of a modern combi boiler.
Because there’s no combustion involved: no flames, no gas: there’s actually less that can go wrong in a "bang" sort of way. But you still want a professional to check the refrigerant levels and ensure the airflow is clear. We always tell our clients: a little bit of care goes a long way.

What’s Next in Our Spring Prep Series?
We’re halfway through the week, and the momentum is really building. Tomorrow, for Day 5, we’re moving from the utility room and the garden into the heart of the home. We’ll be talking about Kitchen Fitters in Guildford and how to design a space that isn't just beautiful to look at, but is also a masterpiece of plumbing and energy efficiency.
Whether you’re dealing with emergency leaks or planning a grand sustainable extension, we’re here to help. The shift to Air Source Heat Pumps is a big part of that journey for many Surrey homeowners, and we’re proud to be the ones leading the charge.
If you’ve been sitting on the fence, wondering if now is the time to ditch the gas, why not give us a shout? We’re local, we know the area, and we love talking about this stuff. There’s no pressure, just honest advice from a team that cares about your home as much as you do.
Who wants a nasty, inefficient heating system in there house these days when the future is already here and sitting on your doorstep? Not us, and hopefully, after reading this, not you either.
See you tomorrow for Day 5!
