Well, we’ve made it. It’s Day 5 of our "Spring Into Action" series here at Heat Eco Building Services, and if you’ve been following along, you’ll know we’ve been busy getting your homes in tip-top shape for the warmer months. Today is Wednesday, April 1st: no jokes here, though: and we’re shifting our focus from the inside of the house to the crown jewels of your Surrey garden: the swimming pool and the pond.

Who doesn't love a Surrey summer? Long evenings, a cold drink in hand, and the sound of water rippling in the background. But there is nothing worse than pulling back the pool cover in June only to find a swamp staring back at you. Or worse, a pump that sounds like a bag of spanners and a liner that’s seen better days. Trust me, we’ve seen it all.

Whether you’re looking for swimming pool maintenance in Surrey or you need a hand with pond maintenance in Farnham, now is the time to act. If you wait until the first heatwave hits, you’ll be at the back of a very long queue. Let's get stuck into how you can get your water features ready for action.

The Big Reveal: Removing the Cover and Assessing the Situation

First things first, let’s talk about that pool cover. It’s been sitting there all winter, probably covered in leaves, twigs, and maybe a bit of local wildlife. Before you even think about pulling it back, give it a good clean. Use a pool cover pump to get rid of any standing water and sweep away the debris. If you just yank it off, all that muck is going straight into your water, making your life a whole lot harder.

Once the cover is off, take a good look at the water. Is it clear? Cloudy? Or is it looking a bit like a science experiment gone wrong? If it’s green, don’t panic, but you’ve got some work to do. Check the water levels too. It’s normal for them to drop slightly over winter, but if it’s significantly lower, you might be looking at a leak.

Checking the Heart of the System: Pumps and Filters

Your pool pump is the heart of the whole operation. It keeps the water moving and the chemicals doing their job. After months of sitting idle, it’s common for seals to dry out or for the motor to seize up.

Before you flip the switch, give the pump a manual turn if you can, and check for any visible cracks or leaks in the housing. Check your filter as well. If you have a sand filter, it might need a backwash or the sand might need replacing if it’s been a few years. For cartridge filters, give them a proper deep clean or just swap them out for new ones.

At Heat Eco, we often find that a quick service now saves a massive repair bill in July. We handle everything from basic checks to full plant room installations. Managing your heating and pool systems from one central hub makes life so much easier, and we’re experts at integrating these systems to keep them running efficiently.

The All-Important Liner Check

Your pool liner is what keeps the water where it’s supposed to be. Over winter, cold temperatures can make liners brittle. As you’re topping up the water, keep a close eye on any wrinkles or tears.

One big tip we always give our clients in Farnham and Guildford: don’t drain your pool unless you absolutely have to and have professional advice. Keeping water in there provides the pressure needed to keep the liner in place. If you drain it, the liner can shrink or pull away from the walls, and then you’re looking at a very expensive replacement. If you do notice a tear, get it patched up now while the water is still cold and nobody is clamouring to jump in.

Pond Maintenance in Farnham: Bringing Life Back to the Garden

Ponds are a bit different from pools because they’re a living ecosystem, but the "spring clean" rules still apply. If you’ve got a pond in your Farnham garden, you’ll know that winter can be tough on the filtration.

  1. Clear the Muck: Use a pond vacuum or a fine net to get the sludge off the bottom. Decaying organic matter releases gases that aren't great for your fish once the weather warms up.
  2. Check the Pump: Just like the pool, make sure your pond pump and fountain are clear of debris.
  3. Plant Life: Trim back any dead reeds or lilies. This is also a great time to divide any overgrown plants or add some new ones to help with natural filtration.
  4. UV Clarifiers: If your pond system has a UV bulb to keep the water clear of algae, now is the time to replace the bulb. They usually only have an effective life of about 12 months.

If you’re thinking about adding a pond or a water feature as part of a larger garden project, we can help with the landscaping and preparation to make sure it’s built to last.

Water Chemistry: The Balancing Act

Now we get to the "science-y" bit. Balancing pool water can feel like a chore, but it’s the difference between a refreshing dip and a case of itchy skin.

You’ll want to test for pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Once those are in the right ballpark, it’s time to "shock" the pool. This is basically a heavy dose of chlorine to kill off any bacteria or algae that’s been hibernating over winter. Let the pump run for at least 24 hours after shocking before you test again.

Remember, as the sun gets stronger in Surrey, your chlorine will dissipate faster. If you’re looking for a more eco-friendly way to keep things warm, we also specialise in water solar panels which can be a game-changer for pool heating costs.

What’s Coming Up Tomorrow?

That’s it for Day 5 of "Spring Into Action." We’ve covered a lot of ground today, but we aren't done yet. Tomorrow is Day 6, and we’re going to be talking about something a bit more urgent: Emergency Plumbing Prep.

Spring isn't just about the fun stuff like pools and ponds; it’s also the time when pipes that might have been slightly damaged by winter frosts start to show their true colours as the ground thaws and shifts. We’ll be showing you what to look for and how to avoid a flooded kitchen or a broken boiler when you least expect it.

If you've got any questions about what we've covered today, or if you're ready to get that pool project started, get in touch with Michael and the team. We're here to help you make this summer the best one yet.

See you tomorrow for more tips and tricks!
