It is Sunday the 5th of April, and if you are anything like us here at Heat Eco Building Services, you’ve probably spent the morning looking out at the Farnham sunshine and thinking about finally turning that thermostat down. Spring in Surrey is a bit of a funny one though. One minute you’re enjoying a coffee in the garden, and the next, there’s a nip in the air that has you reaching for the radiator dial.
We are currently on Day 4 of our 7-day Spring prep series. We’ve already covered Spring boiler checkups for those sticking with gas, looked at getting those Surrey pools ready for a dip, and yesterday we talked about those stunning eco-friendly bathroom renovations over in Guildford. Today, we are diving into something that is literally changing the game for how we think about comfort: Air Source Heat Pumps.
If you’ve been considering making the switch, there really isn't a better time than right now. Installing a heat pump in the spring means you are perfectly positioned to take advantage of the milder weather while setting yourself up for a massive drop in energy bills come next winter.
The "Set and Forget" Magic
The biggest shock our customers in Farnham get when we install a new heat pump system isn’t the technology itself, it’s how little they actually have to do with it. We’re all so used to that old-school way of living, waiting for the house to get freezing, cranking the boiler up to 25 degrees, then turning it off when we start sweating. It’s a constant battle with the control panel.
Heat pumps don't work like that. They are designed to maintain a steady, lovely temperature all day and night. It’s what we call "set and forget." Because these systems are so efficient at pulling heat from the outside air (even when it feels chilly to us), they just tick along in the background. You won't find yourself rushing to the hallway to mess with the settings anymore. Who wants to worry about there home temperature every five minutes when there’s a garden to enjoy?

Why 350% Efficiency Matters to Your Wallet
We get asked all the time, "Michael, is it really worth the swap?" The numbers speak for themselves. A standard gas boiler, even a decent modern one, is maybe 90% to 92% efficient. That means for every pound you spend on gas, you’re losing 8 or 9 pence straight out the flue.
An air source heat pump? You’re looking at efficiencies of 350% or more.
It sounds like magic, but it’s just clever engineering. It uses a bit of electricity to run a fan and a compressor, and it multiplies that energy by extracting heat from the environment. Even at -15°C, there’s heat in the air to be harvested. In the spring, when the Farnham air is sitting at a nice 10 or 12 degrees, these units are barely breaking a sweat. Your boiler installation might have served you well, but the world is moving toward these eco-conscious alternatives.
The Secret Summer Perk: Cooling
Here is the thing most people forget about heat pumps. They aren't just for heating. As we head into May and June, Surrey can get surprisingly muggy. Because a heat pump is basically a fridge running in reverse, many systems can actually be configured to provide cooling during the summer months.
Imagine having a home that’s perfectly warm in April but stays refreshingly cool in July, all from the same piece of kit. It’s a total transformation of your living environment. We’ve seen a huge uptick in people asking for this during our home improvement consultations because it adds so much value to the property and the way you actually live in it.

Farnham and the £7,500 Helping Hand
Let’s talk about the money side of things, because we know that’s a big factor for any homeowner. The UK government is still pushing hard for sustainable heating, and that means the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a massive win for Farnham residents. Right now, you can get a £7,500 grant to help cover the cost of replacing your old fossil fuel boiler with a heat pump.
When you combine that grant with the long-term savings on your energy bills, the math starts to look very attractive. Plus, these units last a long time. While a gas boiler might start getting temperamental after 10 years, a well-installed heat pump is looking at a 15 to 20-year lifespan with just basic maintenance. Usually, it’s just a matter of making sure the external unit stays clear of leaves and debris, no more worrying about complicated internal combustion issues every winter.
Integrating with Underfloor Heating
If you’re planning a bigger renovation this spring, maybe a new kitchen or a bathroom renovation, that’s the perfect time to think about the heat pump. Heat pumps work at their absolute best when they are paired with underfloor heating.
Because underfloor heating runs at a lower temperature than traditional radiators, it’s a match made in heaven for the steady output of a heat pump. We recently finished a project in Guildford where we installed eco-friendly wood-look flooring over a new underfloor system. The result? A home that feels cozy the moment you walk in, with no bulky radiators taking up wall space.

A Sustainable Future for Surrey Homes
At Heat Eco Building Services, we really care about the "Eco" part of our name. We’ve been serving the Farnham and Aldershot areas for a long time, and we see the shift happening. People want homes that are cheaper to run and better for the planet. Switching to a heat pump is one of the single biggest things you can do to reduce your home’s carbon footprint.
When we come out to do a site survey, we don't just look at where the unit goes. We look at your whole house. Is the insulation up to scratch? Are your pipes sized correctly? We’ve seen plenty of "pro" jobs where things were rushed, and that’s just not how we work. We make sure the copper and plastic pipework is properly insulated to stop any heat escaping before it reaches your rooms. It’s those little details that make the difference between a system that works and a system that saves you a fortune.

What to Expect During Installation
We know that "construction" can be a scary word. You’re worried about mess, noise, and having your house turned upside down. The good news is that a heat pump installation is generally much less invasive than people think. Most of the work happens outside or in your utility area.
- The Survey: We check your current setup and calculate exactly what size pump you need.
- The Prep: We might need to upgrade a few radiators or look at your hot water cylinder.
- The Install: The outdoor unit is placed (usually on a neat concrete pad or brackets), and we connect the plumbing.
- The Handover: We show you how to use the controls, though, like I said, you won't need to touch them much!
We pride ourselves on being tidy. Whether we are doing plumbing work or a full extension, we treat your home like it’s our own. No one wants to find a mess in there house after a long day at work.
Spring is the Window of Opportunity
Why now? Why April? Well, once we hit the "proper" summer, our schedules tend to fill up with pool maintenance and major building projects. And by the time autumn rolls around, everyone who’s boiler has died is calling us in a panic.
By acting now, you get the pick of the dates, you get the system settled in while the weather is mild, and you can enjoy that "indoor-outdoor" living that we love in Surrey. There’s nothing like having your large glass doors open to the garden, knowing that your heating system is working perfectly and efficiently in the background.
