Spring has finally landed in Surrey and honestly, the team and I at Heat Eco couldn't be happier. This is Day 2 of our 7-day Spring Prep series: yesterday we were over in Farnham looking at boilers, but today is all about the dream: getting that garden summer-ready with a proper swimming pool.

Who wants to be stuck in a hot garden with nowhere to cool off when the July heatwave hits? Not me, and definitely not our clients. But if you want to be diving in by the time the kids break up for school, you’ve got to start moving now. A swimming pool isn’t just a big hole in the ground with some water in it; there’s a lot of planning, a bit of red tape, and some clever engineering involved to make sure it’s eco-friendly and doesn't cost a fortune to run.

The Boring Stuff First: Permits and Planning in Surrey

I know, I know. You want to talk about tiles and underwater lights, but we have to talk about the Council first. In Surrey, if your pool is going to be larger than 14 m² (about 150 sq. ft.) or deeper than 450 mm (18 inches), you’re going to need a building permit. This applies to everything: in-ground, above-ground, and even those fancy hot tubs.

And it’s not just the pool itself. If we’re building a shed to house your pumps and filters, that needs a permit too. We also have to look at your plumbing. If you’re using a sand filter, the drainage needs a specific review because of how the backwash works. It sounds like a headache, but we handle the swimming pool install and maintance around Guildford and Surrey so you don't have to stress about the paperwork.

One thing people often forget is the fencing. According to the bylaws, you need a non-climbable fence with a self-closing, lockable gate. Safety is huge for us, and the council won't sign off without it. A pool cover is great for keeping the heat in, but it doesn't count as a safety barrier in the eyes of the law.

Getting the Ground Ready

Once the permits are sorted, the real work begins. This is where you see the big toys come out. We bring in the excavators to dig out the space, and let me tell you, it’s a bit of a messy process initially. But we’re big on eco-conscious construction, so we make sure the soil is handled properly and the foundations are solid.

We don't just dig a hole and hope for the best. We prepare the subsoil with a gravel-based layer: usually around 8-16 mm washed gravel: placed onto geotextile fabric. This ensures everything is compacted and won't shift when the weight of several tons of water is added. If your pool is close to your house or another building, we might even need a geotechnical report to make sure we aren't affecting the foundations of your home. It’s all about doing it right the first time.

Choosing Your Pool: Above-Ground vs. In-Ground

A lot of people ask me which is better. In-ground pools are the gold standard: they look stunning and add serious value to your property. But they take longer to build and cost more. Above-ground pools are a fantastic alternative, especially the engineered factory-built kits. They’re quicker to install and if they’re more than 600 mm above grade, they do count towards your lot coverage, so keep that in mind for planning.

Whether you go for a liner pool or a tiled finish, the filtration system is the heart of the operation. We’re installing more and more cartridge filters these days because they’re generally easier to maintain and don’t require the same heavy-duty plumbing permits as sand filters.

Heating Your Pool Without Breaking the Bank

This is where Heat Eco really shines. Let’s face it, the British summer can be a bit… temperamental. You need a heater if you actually want to use the pool for more than three days a year. But with energy prices where they are, you don't want a heater that’s going to drain your bank account.

We specialize in heat pump installation in Farnham and Guildford. An air-source heat pump is incredibly efficient for a pool because it moves heat from the air into the water. It’s way more sustainable than an old-fashioned gas heater.

If you really want to go green, we can look at water solar panels or PV solar panels to offset the electricity costs. Imagine swimming in a 28-degree pool that’s being heated by the sun. It’s a win-win for your wallet and the planet. We can even integrate the pool controls into a central hub so you can crank up the heat from your phone before you even get home from work.

The Final Touches: Landscaping and Integration

A pool shouldn't just look like it was dropped into your garden; it should feel like it belongs there. This is why we often combine pool projects with our landscaping services. Think about the stone patio surrounding the water: you want something that's non-slip but looks beautiful.

We love creating that seamless transition between the inside and the outside. If you’ve got a modern kitchen or a dining area with big glass doors, we can align the patio levels so it feels like one massive living space. It really changes how you use your home. Check out our gallery to see some of the transformations we’ve done recently.

Keeping it Clean: Maintenance Tips

Once the pool is in and you’ve had your first swim, the job doesn't stop. Maintenance is key. You’ve got to keep the pH levels balanced and the filters clean. We offer commercial maintenance but we also do plenty of residential upkeep.

My top tip? Get a good pool cover. It keeps the debris out, but more importantly, it stops the heat from escaping overnight. If you've spent money heating that water with a heat pump, you don't want to lose it all to the cold night air. It’s the simplest way to stay eco-friendly.

Why Work With Heat Eco?

We’re a local business, and we care about the community here in Surrey. We aren't just pool guys; we’re builders, plumbers, and heating experts. That means when we install a pool, we understand the plumbing and the underfloor heating systems that might connect to it. We see the whole picture.

We pride ourselves on being friendly, professional, and always looking for the most sustainable way to get the job done.
