Energy bills in Surrey have been a bit of a nightmare lately, haven't they? We’ve all felt the pinch. Whether you’re over in Farnham or down in Bordon, watching those monthly direct debits creep up is enough to make anyone want to go off-grid entirely. At Heat Eco Building Services, we’ve been spending a lot of time talking to local homeowners about how to actually take control of their power. Most people think just sticking some PV solar panels on the roof is the "job done" moment, but honestly, that’s only half the story.

If you want to really slash those bills, you’ve got to talk about battery storage. Without a battery, you’re basically giving away half your hard-earned energy to the grid for pennies and then buying it back at a premium once the sun goes down. It doesn't make much sense when you think about it like that, does it?

Why Solar Panels Alone Aren't Enough Anymore

So, here is the deal. PV solar panels are great: don't get me wrong. They sit up there on your roof in Guildford, soaking up the rays and turning them into electricity. But most of us aren't home during the day when the sun is at its peak. We’re out at work, running errands, or doing the school run. While the panels are producing all this lovely free energy, the only things running in the house are maybe the fridge and the standby light on the telly.

The rest of that energy? It gets sent back to the National Grid. Then, you come home at 6 PM, turn on the oven, the kettle, and the power shower, and suddenly you’re paying the energy companies top whack because your panels have stopped for the night. This is where the integration of PV solar panels with battery storage changes everything.

The Magic of Battery Storage

Integrating a battery into your solar setup is like having a giant piggy bank for your electricity. Instead of your surplus energy disappearing into the grid during the day, it gets tucked away in your battery. Then, when you get home and the sun has tucked itself away, you start drawing from your own stored power instead of buying it from your supplier.

We’ve seen self-consumption rates jump from about 30% with just panels to as high as 70% or 80% once a battery is involved. That is a massive difference in your yearly savings. Who wants a massive energy bill in there inbox when they could be using power they generated themselves for free?

Making it Work in Surrey: Local Schemes and Savings

If you’re living in Surrey, you’re actually in a bit of a lucky spot. There are schemes like Solar Together Surrey which is a group-buying initiative backed by the council. It helps residents get high-quality installations at a lower price because everyone is buying in bulk. It’s definitely something worth looking into if you’re worried about the upfront costs.

Speaking of costs, there is some really good news on the tax front. Right now, and until March 31, 2027, there is 0% VAT on domestic solar and battery installations. That’s a 20% saving right off the bat. It makes the "payback period": the time it takes for the system to pay for itself through bill savings: much shorter than it used to be.

At Heat Eco, we’ve been busy doing heat pump installations in Farnham and Guildford, and we always tell our customers that if you’re going green with your heating, you really should be looking at solar and batteries to power it. They go together like tea and biscuits.

How the Integration Actually Happens

You might be wondering if your house is even right for this. Most modern PV systems are "AC-coupled" or "DC-coupled." Don't worry about the jargon too much: that's our job to figure out. Basically, it means we can either install the battery at the same time as the panels or retrofit one to your existing system.

If we’re doing a fresh install, we usually look at a hybrid inverter. This clever bit of kit manages both the panels and the battery in one box. It’s neat, tidy, and very efficient. If you’ve already got panels but no battery, we can usually add a battery system alongside your existing inverter.

We’ve worked on all sorts of properties across Surrey, from Victorian terraces in Guildford to newer builds in Bordon. The key is finding a spot for the battery. They aren't huge: usually about the size of a small suitcase: and they can often go in a garage, a utility room, or even under the stairs if there is enough ventilation.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): Getting Paid to Be Green

Even with a battery, there might be days in the height of summer where you’ve got more power than you know what to do with. Your battery is full, your house is running, and there is still sun hitting those panels. This is where the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) comes in.

The energy companies are actually required to pay you for any electricity you export back to the grid. While the rates aren't as high as what they charge you to buy it, it’s still money in your pocket. When you combine the savings from using your own stored power with the payments from the SEG, the financial argument for solar + battery storage becomes really strong.

It's Not Just About the Money

While slashing bills is the big draw, there are other reasons we see people in Surrey making the switch. There is a certain peace of mind that comes with it. Some battery systems offer "island mode" or backup power. If there is a local power cut (and we know they happen from time to time when a storm hits the Surrey Hills), your battery can keep your essential lights and fridge running.

Then there is the eco-conscious side of things. By using more of your own solar power, you’re significantly reducing your home’s carbon footprint. It’s part of a bigger picture: future-proofing your home so it’s ready for the next 20 years. We’re seeing a big trend where people are upgrading there bathrooms and kitchens with energy-efficient fixtures at the same time they do their solar, making the whole house a lean, green machine.

Things to Consider Before You Jump In

Before you start picking out battery brands, there are a few things we always check for our clients:

  1. Roof Orientation: You don't need a perfectly south-facing roof, but it helps. East/West splits can actually be great for batteries because you get a longer period of generation throughout the day.
  2. Your Usage: We look at your energy bills to see when you’re actually using power. If you’re a night owl, a bigger battery is a must.
  3. Future Plans: Thinking about getting an Electric Vehicle (EV)? Or maybe switching to underfloor heating? We need to size the system so it can handle those extra loads down the line.

We always suggest starting with a proper survey. We’re local, so we can pop over to Farnham or Guildford and give you a straight-up answer on what will work for your specific roof and budget. No pushy sales, just Michael and the team giving you the facts.

The First Step in a 7-Day Journey

This post is actually part one of a series we’re doing this week. We’re calling it our "Future-Proof Your Surrey Home" series. Over the next few days, we’re going to be diving deeper into:

  • Air Source Heat Pumps (and why they aren't as scary as people think).
  • Eco-friendly boiler upgrades for those not ready for a heat pump yet.
  • Smart heating controls to stop you wasting money in empty rooms.
  • How to make your plumbing and bathrooms more water-efficient.

The goal is to help you understand how all these pieces fit together. Because at the end of the day, Heat Eco Building Services isn't just about fixing a leak or installing a boiler; we’re about making sure your home is comfortable, affordable, and sustainable for the long haul.
