Walk down any street in Farnham or Guildford lately and you’ll probably hear someone chatting about heat pumps. It’s the big topic at the moment and for good reason. With the way energy prices have been swinging about like a pendulum, everyone is looking for a way to take back a bit of control. We’ve been seeing more and more of our customers in Bordon and Aldershot asking how they can get away from old, expensive fossil fuels and honestly, it’s about time we had this conversation properly.

At Heat Eco Building Services, we’ve been busy installing these systems across Surrey and Hampshire, and the feedback has been incredible. People are tired of seeing there heating bills skyrocket every winter. If you’re still sitting on a 15-year-old gas boiler or, even worse, relying on heating oil that costs a fortune to deliver, you really need to look at what’s happening in the world of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs).

The Elephant in the Room: The Cost of Living

Let’s be real for a second. We all know that heating oil prices tripled not that long ago. It caught a lot of people off guard, especially in the more rural parts of Surrey where mains gas isn't always an option. Even if you are on gas, the prices aren't exactly friendly these days. Who wants to spend all their hard-earned money just to keep the living room warm? Not us, and definitely not our clients.

The biggest reason everyone is talking about ASHPs right now is the money. Not just the savings on the monthly bills, but the help you get to actually put one in. The government is currently offering the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which is basically a £7,500 grant to help you swap out your old boiler for a heat pump. That is a massive chunk of change. It makes the switch genuinely affordable for a lot of families who might have thought it was out of reach before.

Modern heating system installation

We’ve helped plenty of people through the process of boiler installation and upgrades, and when you factor in that grant, the math starts looking very good indeed. You can check out more about our services over on our plumbing page if you're wondering how we handle the technical side of things.

How Does This "Magic" Actually Work?

I get asked this all the time: "Michael, how can you get heat out of thin air when it’s freezing outside?" It sounds like a bit of a magic trick, doesn't it? But it’s actually just clever engineering. Think of it like a fridge but in reverse. A fridge takes the heat out of the inside and dumps it into your kitchen. A heat pump takes the tiny amounts of heat energy that exist in the outside air: even when it's -15°C outside: and squeezes it until it's hot enough to warm your radiators or your underfloor heating.

The efficiency is what really blows people's minds. A standard gas boiler might be 90% or 94% efficient. That means for every pound you spend on gas, you get 90p or 94p of heat. An Air Source Heat Pump? It operates at 300% to 400% efficiency. For every 1kW of electricity you put in, you get 3kW or 4kW of heat out. It’s almost like getting free energy from the sky.

When we explain this to our customers in Bordon, you can see the lightbulbs go off. It’s a complete game-changer for how we think about home comfort.

Is Your Home Ready for the Switch?

Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you can just slap a heat pump on any old house and it’ll be perfect. We like to be honest with our clients. For a heat pump to work its best, your home needs to be reasonably well-insulated. If you’ve got draughts coming through the windows and no loft insulation, that heat is just going to fly right out the roof.

But don't let that put you off. Many homes in Surrey, from the Victorian terraces in Guildford to the newer builds in Farnham, are perfectly suitable or can be made suitable with a few tweaks. We often look at the whole picture: maybe you need some larger radiators to handle the lower flow temperatures, or maybe it’s the perfect time to install that bathroom renovation you’ve been dreaming of while we’re messing with the pipes anyway.

We love creating spaces that feel great to live in. Whether it’s a home improvement project or a total overhaul, the goal is always the same: a cozy, efficient home that doesn't cost the earth to run.

The Benefits You’ll Actually Notice

Besides the lower bills, there are a few other things people love about their heat pumps once they’re installed:

  1. Low Maintenance: These things are built to last. You're looking at a 20 to 25-year lifespan if you treat them right. Compare that to a gas boiler that usually starts acting up after 10 or 12 years.
  2. No More Fuel Deliveries: If you’re on oil or LPG, you know the stress of checking the tank and hoping the delivery truck can get down your lane in the snow. With a heat pump, that stress just disappears.
  3. Better for the Planet: We’re all trying to do our bit, right? Switching to an ASHP is one of the single biggest things you can do to lower your home's carbon footprint. It’s clean, it’s green, and it’s the future.
  4. Quiet Operation: Modern units are surprisingly quiet. You’ll barely notice it sitting outside.

Future-Proofing Your Surrey Home

This post is actually part of a 7-day series we’re doing on future-proofing your home. We’re talking about everything from PV solar panels to battery storage and eco-friendly boilers. Why? Because the world is changing. We want to help our local community in areas like Aldershot and beyond stay ahead of the curve.

Imagine having a heat pump powered by solar panels on your roof, with a battery in the garage to store the extra energy. That’s the dream, isn’t it? Being almost entirely self-sufficient. It’s not just "eco-warrior" stuff anymore; it’s just smart home ownership.

We’ve seen some stunning results lately where we’ve combined these technologies. It turns a house into a high-performance machine. If you want to keep up with what we’re doing and see some of our latest projects, keep an eye on our company news section.

Why Choose Heat Eco Building Services?
