Everyone is talking about energy bills these days, and for good reason. Whether you’re over in Farnham or down in Bordon, we’re all looking for ways to keep the house warm without it costing the earth, literally or financially. But here's the thing: we see a lot of folks spending good money on fancy tech like solar panels or heat pumps, only to realize they aren’t getting the results they expected.
Usually, it’s not the tech’s fault. It’s the mistakes made during the planning or the way the system is being used. At Heat Eco Building Services, we’ve been into the nuts and bolts of home heating and eco-upgrades for years, and we want to help you avoid the common pitfalls. Who wants a nasty bathroom in there house these days, or a heating system that eats cash? Exactly.
So, let's dive into the seven big mistakes people are making right now and how we can get them sorted for you.
1. Buying the Shiny Kit Before Sorting the "Fabric"
This is the biggest one. People jump straight to an Air Source Heat Pump because they want to ditch the gas, but they forget that a heat pump is only as good as the house it’s sitting in. If your loft insulation is thin and your windows are draughty, that expensive heat pump is just going to be working overtime to heat the local neighborhood instead of your living room.
We call it "Fabric First." You’ve got to think of your house like a thermos flask. If the lid is off, the tea gets cold no matter how much you stir it. Before you look at new heating, we always recommend checking your insulation. Even small things like draught-proofing or topping up the loft can make a massive difference.

If you ignore the building fabric, you’ll end up with a system that’s too big and too expensive to run. It’s all about balance. We love helping people in Guildford and surrounding areas figure out that roadmap: getting the house sealed up first so the new tech can actually do its job.
2. Treating a Heat Pump Like an Old-School Boiler
We get it: you’ve spent decades turning the heating on for an hour in the morning and a few hours at night. With a gas boiler, that works because it blasts out high heat very quickly. But if you try to do that with a heat pump, you’re going to be disappointed.
Heat pumps are "low and slow." They like to run at a lower temperature for much longer periods. It’s a bit like a marathon runner versus a sprinter. If you keep clicking it on and off, the system has to work way harder to get back up to temperature, which sends your electricity bill through the roof.

The fix? Set it and forget it (mostly). Once we’ve got your system commissioned properly with weather compensation, let the tech do the heavy lifting. It’ll adjust itself based on the temperature outside, keeping your home at a lovely, steady warmth all day. It feels different, sure, but your wallet will thank you.
3. The "Bigger is Better" Myth (Oversizing)
In the old days of plumbing, if a 15kW boiler was good, a 30kW boiler was "safe." It meant you’d never run out of heat. But with modern eco-tech, oversizing is a disaster. If your heat pump or your new boiler installation is too big for the space, it starts "short-cycling." This means it turns on, gets too hot too fast, turns off, then turns on again two minutes later.
This wears out the parts faster and kills your efficiency. We see this all the time when someone hasn’t done a proper room-by-room heat loss calculation. We don't guess; we measure. Whether we’re looking at a cottage in Bordon or a commercial space in Farnborough, we make sure the unit is sized perfectly for the actual heat you need.
4. Ignoring Smart Tariffs and "Time of Use"
If you’ve got solar panels or a home battery, you shouldn't be paying a flat rate for your electricity. That’s a massive mistake. The real magic happens when you move to a "Time of Use" tariff. This is where electricity is super cheap at certain times: usually overnight or when the wind is blowing hard somewhere in the North Sea.

With a battery, you can "fill up" on cheap power at 2 AM and then use it to run your kettle and toaster during the expensive breakfast rush. If you aren't doing this, you're leaving money on the table. We’re big fans of helping our clients set up these smart controls so the house basically manages itself. It’s clever stuff, and it makes the ROI on your solar setup look a whole lot better.
5. Under-sizing Your Solar Array
When people first look at Solar PV, they often think about their current electric bill. "I use X amount of power, so I'll buy X amount of panels." But what about two years from now?
If you’re planning on getting an Electric Vehicle (EV) or switching to a heat pump, your electricity needs are going to go up. It’s much cheaper to put a few extra panels on the roof while the scaffolding is already up than it is to call us back in three years to add more. We always suggest future-proofing. Think about what your home will look like in 2030, not just 2026.
6. Putting Your Battery in the Wrong Place
Batteries are a bit like humans: they don't like being too hot or too cold. We’ve seen people stick their home battery in a tiny, unventilated cupboard or out in a freezing shed where it struggles to perform.

Temperature affects how fast they charge and how long they last. We usually recommend a garage or a utility room where the temperature stays relatively stable. Also, think about access! You don’t want it buried behind a mountain of boxes. It’s part of your home’s "engine room" now, so it needs a bit of respect.
7. The "Set and Forget" Fallacy (Neglecting Maintenance)
Just because it’s eco-friendly doesn't mean it’s maintenance-free. We’ve been to call-outs for heat pumps that aren’t working well, only to find the external filters are blocked with leaves or the refrigerant needs a top-up.

Even your radiators need love. If you haven't had a power flush in years, there’s probably a load of sludge in your pipes making your heat pump work 20% harder than it needs to. A quick service once a year keeps everything humming along. It’s a lot cheaper to pay for a service than it is for a repair in the middle of a Surrey winter!
