So, we all know that the weather in Surrey can be a bit of a mixed bag, right? One minute it’s lovely and sunny in Farnham Park, and the next you're cranking up the heating because there’s a proper chill in the air. But with energy prices doing whatever they want and everyone talking about the "green transition," it’s hard not to wonder if our homes are actually ready for what’s coming.
At Heat Eco Building Services, we’ve been busy helping folks across Farnham, Guildford, and Bordon figure this stuff out. Future-proofing your house isn't just about being "green" for the sake of it – though that’s obviously massive for the planet – it’s really about making sure your home is comfortable, cheap to run, and basically worth more when you eventually decide to move on. Who wants a nasty, inefficient house these days anyway? Not us, and definitely not you.
This post is the first in our new series, and I'm going to walk you through 5 straightforward steps to get your place in tip-top, eco-conscious shape.
1. Get the "Fabric" Right (Insulation and Draughts)

Before you go off and buy fancy gadgets, you’ve got to look at what we call the "fabric" of your home. It’s basically like putting on a decent jumper before you bother turning the heater on. If your house is leaking heat like a sieve, no amount of tech is going to save you money.
We see it all the time when we're out on boiler repairs – we'll find pipes that aren't insulated properly or lofts that haven't seen a new roll of glass wool since the 90s. If you’re living in one of those lovely older Victorian terraces in Farnham, you’ve probably got suspended floors and solid walls that just love to let the cold in.
Start with the basics:
- Loft Insulation: It’s cheap, it’s easy, and it makes a massive difference.
- Pipe Lagging: See that photo above? That’s the kind of stuff we handle. Making sure your hot water stays hot while it’s traveling through your walls is a no-brainer.
- Draught Proofing: Check your windows and doors. If you can feel a breeze when everything is shut, you’re literally burning money.
2. Solar PV and That All-Important Battery

Now we're getting into the exciting stuff. Solar panels (or Solar PV) are everywhere in Surrey now, and for good reason. Farnham actually gets a decent amount of sun (mostly!), and sticking panels on your roof is one of the best ways to tell the big energy companies to jog on.
But here is the thing: solar on its own is great, but solar with a battery is the real game-changer. Most of us are out at work during the day when the sun is doing its thing. Without a battery, all that free power just goes back to the grid for a pittance. With a battery, you store that juice and use it to power your telly and your oven in the evening.
We’ve been seeing a huge uptick in people asking about this combination because it makes your home so much more resilient. Plus, if you've got an Electric Vehicle (EV), you can basically charge your car for free. It’s lovely seeing our customers in Guildford saving hundreds on there bills every year just by catching a bit of sunshine.
3. Air Source Heat Pumps (The Big Shift)

You’ve probably heard people chatting about Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) down at the pub. There is a lot of talk about them, and honestly, they are the future. Think of an ASHP like a fridge but in reverse – it takes the warmth from the air outside (even when it’s cold!) and pumps it into your radiators or underfloor heating.
The best bit? The government is currently offering £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) to help you switch. That’s a massive chunk of the cost covered. At Heat Eco, we specialize in these installations, and we always tell people: they work best when you’ve done Step 1 (insulation).
If you're building an extension or doing a big renovation in Bordon, putting in underfloor heating with a heat pump is the gold standard. It’s a low, consistent heat that feels amazing under your feet and doesn't cost the earth to run. We’ve got plenty of experience with commercial building maintenance and domestic installs, so we know exactly how to size these things so you aren't left shivering in February.
4. Modern Eco-Boiler Upgrades

Look, we get it. Not everyone is ready to rip out their whole system and go full heat pump tomorrow. Maybe your budget is a bit tighter, or your house just isn't quite ready for it yet. That doesn’t mean you can’t be more eco-conscious.
A modern, A-rated combi-boiler is leagues ahead of the old clunkers from 15 years ago. They are way more efficient, meaning they use less gas to get the same amount of heat. If your current boiler is making weird banging noises or you're constantly calling us for drainage surveys because of leaks, it might be time for an upgrade.
We love a clean kitchen install like the one in the photo above. You can tuck a high-efficiency boiler away in a cupboard and barely know it’s there, but your bank account will definitely notice the difference. It’s a great "middle step" for future-proofing while you plan out your longer-term green goals.
5. Smart Controls and Water Efficiency

Finally, don’t forget the "small" things that add up. Smart thermostats (like Nest or Tado) let you control your heating from your phone. No more heating an empty house because you forgot to turn it off before heading to work in Farnborough!
And then there is the bathroom. We do a lot of bathroom renovations and wetroom conversions, and we always push for water-saving fixtures. Low-flow taps and dual-flush toilets might not sound sexy, but they save a staggering amount of water over a year. Plus, heating water takes energy, so using less water means using less gas or electricity. It’s all connected!
We recently finished a stunning bathroom project in Farnham where we installed a heated towel rail and high-efficiency plumbing. The client was over the moon – not just because it looked like a spa, but because their water meter stopped spinning like a propeller.
Wrapping Up
Future-proofing your home in Farnham isn't something you have to do all at once. Whether you start with some insulation and a smart thermostat, or you go the whole hog with solar panels and a heat pump, every step counts.
