Guildford is a lovely place to live, but let’s be honest, a lot of the houses around here are a bit drafty and old-fashioned when it comes to energy. If you're living in a Victorian terrace near the town centre or a detached house out in the Surrey Hills, you’ve probably noticed your energy bills creeping up and up. We’re all looking for ways to save a bit of money and do our bit for the planet at the same time. This is the first post in our new 7-day series where we're going to show you exactly how to future-proof your home.

At Heat Eco Building Services, we’ve been helping folks across Guildford, Farnham, and Bordon get their homes up to scratch. It isn't just about being "green": it's about making your home more comfortable and way cheaper to run. Who wants a nasty cold bathroom or a kitchen that costs a fortune to heat in there house these days? Not us, and definitely not our customers.

Starting with the Basics: The Energy Audit

Before you go splashing out on fancy tech, you need to know where you're losing heat. Most homes in Surrey lose about 25% of their heat through the roof if it isn't insulated right. That is just throwing money out the window. We always tell people to start with the "quick wins." Check your loft insulation, look for gaps around your windows, and maybe think about your lighting. Switching to LEDs is a no-brainer, honestly. It’s cheap, it’s fast, and it works.

But once you’ve done the basics, it’s time to look at the big stuff. The stuff that really makes a difference to your carbon footprint and your bank balance.

The Power of the Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)

If you’ve been reading the news lately, you’ve probably heard about Air Source Heat Pumps. They’re basically like a fridge but in reverse. They take the heat from the outside air: even when it's freezing outside: and use it to heat your home and your water. We’ve been installing these all over Surrey lately, and the results are pretty stunning.

The beauty of an ASHP is that it’s incredibly efficient. For every 1kW of electricity you put in, you get about 3kW to 4kW of heat out. Compare that to an old gas boiler where you’re lucky to get 0.9kW of heat for every 1kW of gas. It’s a game-changer for homes in places like Farnham where people want to move away from fossil fuels but keep their homes toasty.

Modern heating system installation

When we install these, we make sure the whole system is balanced. You can't just slap a heat pump on an old, sludge-filled radiator system and expect it to work perfectly. That’s why we often recommend a power flush before we start. It clears out all the gunk and makes sure your new eco-friendly system can actually do its job properly.

Solar PV and Battery Storage: Taking Control

The next step in mastering an eco-friendly home is generating your own power. Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels are appearing on more and more roofs around Guildford, and for good reason. Even with our English weather, you can generate a significant amount of electricity.

But here’s the secret: the panels are only half the story. To really master your energy, you need battery storage. Without a battery, any electricity you don't use during the day just goes back to the grid. With a battery, you store that sunshine and use it to power your TV, your oven, or your lights in the evening when the sun’s gone down. It’s about being independent. We love seeing the look on a customer's face when they realize they haven't paid for electricity for three days straight because the sun’s been out.

Don't Forget the Boiler Upgrade

We know not everyone is ready to jump straight into a heat pump. Sometimes the house just isn't ready for it yet, or the budget isn't quite there. That’s totally fine. You can still make a huge dent in your emissions by upgrading to a high-efficiency eco-friendly boiler. Modern condensing boilers are miles ahead of the stuff that was being put in twenty years ago.

If you’re thinking about a home improvement project, upgrading the boiler should be top of the list. We’ve been doing a lot of work in Bordon recently, replacing old, clunky boilers with sleek new models that fit right into a kitchen cupboard. They’re quieter, they take up less space, and they’re "hydrogen-ready," which means you’re prepared for whatever the future of the gas grid looks like.

Sustainable Kitchens and Bathrooms

Eco-friendly living isn't just about the plant room or the loft. It’s about the rooms you use every day. When we do a bathroom or kitchen renovation, we’re always looking at how to make it more sustainable. This means water-saving taps, dual-flush toilets, and appliances that don’t guzzle energy.

Modern Bathroom Installation

In the bathroom, you can go for things like infrared heating panels instead of traditional radiators. They heat objects (and people!) directly rather than just the air, which feels lovely and is way more efficient. Plus, they look like mirrors or sleek pieces of art, so they’re a great choice if you want that modern, minimalist look. We’ve done some bathroom upgrades recently in Guildford where the customer couldn't believe how much warmer the room felt with half the energy usage.

Maintaining Your Eco-Home

Once you’ve got all this great tech installed, you’ve got to look after it. A sustainable home is a well-maintained home. We see it all the time: people spend thousands on a new system then forget about it for five years. That’s a recipe for trouble.

Regular servicing is key. Whether it’s checking the pressure on your heat pump or making sure your solar panels are clean, a little bit of care goes a long way. This is especially true for things like your plumbing. We offer comprehensive drain inspections because even a small leak or a blockage can cause your system to work harder than it needs to, which wastes energy.

Why Heat Eco?

We aren't just a bunch of plumbers and builders. We’re part of the Surrey community. Michael Randall, our director, started this company because he wanted to provide a service that actually cares about the long-term future of our homes. We aren't interested in "quick fixes" that break in two years. We want to build things that last.

Whether you're in the middle of Guildford or out in the sticks near Bordon, we bring the same level of care to every job. We’ll sit down with you, have a brew, and talk through what actually makes sense for your specific house. Every home is different, and there’s no "one size fits all" when it comes to being eco-friendly.

What’s Next in the Series?

This is just the beginning of our 7-day guide. Over the next week, we’re going to dive deep into:

  • The nitty-gritty of Solar PV and why Surrey is actually great for it.
  • How to choose between an Air Source Heat Pump and a modern boiler.
  • The secret to a perfect, water-efficient luxury bathroom.
  • Why battery storage is the "missing link" for most homes.
  • And much more.

If you’re thinking about making a change, don't wait for the winter to arrive and your bills to skyrocket. Now is the perfect time to start planning. Have a look around our blog for more tips, or give us a shout if you want to chat about your next project. We’re always happy to help.

The transition to a sustainable Surrey home doesn't have to be scary. It starts with one small decision. Maybe today it’s just reading this post. Tomorrow, it might be booking a survey. Either way, you're on the right track. Let’s make our homes better, one eco-friendly upgrade at a time. The results really do speak for themselves when you see that first energy bill after a proper upgrade. It’s a great feeling.
